The national drug registration system within Ukraine is operated by the State Pharmacological Center, a division of the Ministry of Health that was established in 1992, shortly after Ukraine became an independent nation. Since that time, more than eight thousand medicinal products have been registered, about 40 percent of which are domestic. A current goal of the Ministry of Health is to achieve world recognition through implementation of European and global standards concerning research, development, expert evaluation, registration, and post-licensing surveillance of medicines and their application in medical practice. As part of this goal, state-supported research institutes are currently implementing international standards for GLP, GCP and GMP.

Ukraine is party to all major international intellectual property rights treaties including the World Trade Organizationšs TRIPS Agreement, Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization, Paris Convention for the Protection of Individual Property, and Trademark Law Treaty.
